Napier to Coromandel via East Cape

Let me phrase it simply: New Zealand is beautiful! The north island as well as the south island. The scenery is a little different in the north. There are hills and mountains on the north island, too. Of course they may be not as high as the Southern Alps, but still beautiful.

My route took me from Napier around the East Cape. I stayed over night at Opotiki. It was a long drive along hills and mountains and I had planned to stop earlier, but I didn’t find a site I liked. The landscape is unique. The round green hills in calm waves. I wish I had better images to show you, but along the winding road, up and down hills and mountains, there were little to almost no opportunities to stop. Those images are in my mind forever.

After a good nights sleep I carried on towards Coromandel. Again, along winding narrow roads making its way up the mountains in a steep climb, winding around the side of the mountain in sharp curves, then opening up to a bit of a wider landscape with farm on every hill. Sheep and cattle on every green spot. And then coming into the part of the island with thick forrests covering hills and mountains.

Coromandel is – at least this time of the year – a quiet little town with a few shops, cafés and restaurants lining main street. Lovely to spend the afternoon, before I headed back to the camper to relax.
