Vasa

The Swedish warship Vasa was built in 1628 and sank on the 10 August 1628, the day of her maiden voyage, after only sailing for just about fifteen minutes. A gust of wind filled her sails and she heeled to the side. This lead to water rushing in through the open gun ports. Due to her instability she couldn’t upright herself and water continued to stream into the ship. Vasa eventually sank in full view of a large crowd at just about 32m depth and 120m to shore.
The ship was discovered again by archeologist Anders Franzén and salvaged in 1961. It is now on display in the Vasa museum on Djurgården.
